The Lagos State Police Command has said that three out of five students of the Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos over their alleged involvement in the death of Sylvester Oromoni Junior, a 12-year-old student of the college are in its custody.
This information was attributed to Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu on Tuesday.
According to a report by Channels Television, Odumosu said three of the five students mentioned by Sylvester before he died are already in custody and cooperating with the police in their findings.
Although their identities were not given, the CP insisted that they are key suspects.
The police boss explained that the Command is set to go for the post mortem of the body in Delta State to ascertain the cause of death.
He is optimistic that police authorities in both Lagos and Delta State are keenly interested in the outcome of the investigation to unravel the mystery behind Sylvester’s death.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased Sylvester Omoroni has demanded for Coroner’s inquest into thẹ death of their son.
Sylvester family made thẹ request through their lawyer, Mr. Fẹmi Falana, SAN, ìn a letter dated December 6, 2021 sent to thẹ Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada.
The foremost human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, is to prosecute the case against the institution over the death of the 12-year-old boy.
Sylvester is believed to have died as a result of bullying, torture by some students who wanted him to join their cult.
CASEFILE gathered that Falana has been briefed by Sylvester’s family.
Falana in the letter said the circumstances leading to the death of the boy demands that the inquest be conducted.
The letter was signed by Taiwo Olawanle, a lawyer in Falana’s law firm.
The letter reads: “We are a firm of legal practitioners committed to the defence of human rights, rule of law and public accountability in Nigeria.
“We have been briefed by the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, who died from injuries he allegedly sustained from the beating by his colleagues that wanted him to join their secret cult group.
“Given the needless death of Sylvester Oromoni, we are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause a coroner’s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young and promising boy and make appropriate recommendations pursuant to Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law 2007 which provides that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his Coroner District is as a result of a death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.
“We hereby request Your Lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstances surrounding this tragic death at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State and we are confident that Your Lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.”
