The Anambra State government has expressed sadness over the death of two notable Nigerians of Igbo extraction, retired Rear Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu and Senator Onyeabo Obi.
A statement by Governor Willie Obiano signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment C. Don Adinuba noted that Admiral Kanu who was appointed the military governor of Imo State on its creation in February, 1976 worked with foresight and commitment.
He noted that Kanu was a man filled with uncommon courage and powerful sense of justice given his credentials as an activist of the finest hue.
Governor Obiano praised Admiral Kanu for his patriotism when he joined some Nigerians to form the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO to campaign against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola.
He said that the people and government of Anambra State have lost a great Igbo man and a great friend and supporter in Ndubuisi Kanu, and prayed that good Lord grants the late admiral eternal rest.
In a similar vein, Governor Willie Obiano has expressed shock over the passage of Senator Onyeabo Obi.
He noted that Obi, who passed at 82, was generally regarded as one of the three top senators in the Second Republic of 1979 to 1983 including Senator Abraham Adesanya and Senator Emeka Echeruo.
The Governor said Nigerians hardly reckon that late Senator Obi was one of the founding founders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, like former Vice President Alex Ekwueme.
Obiano said late Senator Obi was a man driven by competence and excellence and pray for the repose of his soul.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State government has praised the Police Service Commission and the Inspector General Police for the recent promotion of three senior police officers, noting that the promotions showed that professionalism, loyalty and hard work pay.
The newly promoted officers are; Dan-Mallam Mohammed, the first Assistant Inspector General of the newly created Zone 13 which covers Anambra and Enugu states with headquarters at Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State; Joseph Egbunike, a police commissioner who has been made a Deputy Inspector General; and Chris Owolabi, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anambra State who has been elevated to Commissioner of Police.
In two separate letters by the Anambra State government to the chairman of the Police service Commission, PSC, Mr. Musiliu Smith, and Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, said “each of the senior officers was eminently deserving of the promotion”.
One of the letters signed by Governor Willie Obiano, noted the individuals were exemplary officers.
