For purchasing a stolen phone, one Oluwaseyi Agbeekola has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment after confessing the crime in a plea bargain arrangement.
Why judge jailed Oluwaseyi
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, jailed the defendant after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge offence, brought on amended information to the court.
Delivering the judgement on Monday, Justice Abike-Fadipe said “Upon the defendant’s plea of guilty on two counts, and the option of a plea bargain agreement dated November 1st, 2023, the defendant is hereby convicted for attempt to commit a felony contrary to Section 406 of Criminal Lagos State 2015, to neglect to prevent a felony contrary to section 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, the agreement has recommended an eight-year term.
“The defendant is hereby sentenced to six years of imprisonment for the first count on attempt to commit a felony and two years of further count for neglect to prevent felony…, both terms shall run consecutively from the date that the defendant has been in custody,” the judge ruled.
Victim was robbed at AIT road
According to the State Counsel, Adebanke Ogunde, Oluwaseyi, “On 17th of May, 2021 at about 11:00p.m around AIT Road, Alagbado, one Oguntola Samuel was attacked by two boys armed with a cutlass, one of the boys attacked him with a machete on his shoulder and robbed him of his iPhone11 Max worth N280,000 and escaped. More facts revealed that the phone was tracked by the uncle to one Chinaso Precious proceeded to report it at Alagbado Police station where officers were mobilised to arrest Chinaso Precious who was in possession of the phone and took him to the police station where he assisted the Police in arresting the suspect, one Oluwaseyi Agbeekola who brought the phone to him, and was taken to Alagbado Police station and Commissioner of Police Special Squad.
“I also like to rely on the statement of the witness, Samuel who was attacked and gave a statement at the CP Special squad.”
Earlier, when the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded guilty to both count one and count two. which included neglect to prevent felony.
Oluwaseyi confessed to buying stolen phone
Part of the charge read, “Oluwaseyi Agbeekola on about the 2nd day of May 2023 around Alagbado area, in the Ikeja Division of Lagos State came to commit a felony by purchasing a stolen phone.”
Before he was sentenced, the judge asked Oluwaseyi Agbeekola if he wanted to proceed with his conviction and sentencing in the absence of his lawyer, A.S. A Ajibola who he claimed was engaged in another court, and he said he was ready.
