The Executive Director of Save the Future of Children Initiative, SAFIN, Olufemi Oyedeji, has urged governments, civil society, communities, and individuals to prioritise the education and empowerment of the girl child on the International Day of the Girl Child.
This call was made during the International Day of the Girl Child celebration organised by the Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs.
SAFIN seeks more investment in girls
SAFIN emphasises that ‘Girls’ Vision for the Future’ aligns with our organisation’s mission to empower girls and ensure their rights are protected. We acknowledge the tremendous potential of girls in Kwara State and beyond. We believe that investing in girls’ education, health, and protection is crucial for a prosperous society.
Oyedeji pointed out that while Nigeria has made progress in promoting the rights and well-being of the girl child, significant challenges persist.
Referring to the statistics in his goodwill message, Oyedeji reiterated that: – 8.1 million girls are out of school (UNICEF, 2022) – 1 in 5 girls aged 15-19 experience child marriage (UNFPA, 2022) – 25% of girls aged 15-24 have experienced physical violence (NDHS, 2018) – 71% of trafficked victims are girls and women (NAPTIP, 2022) – 39% of girls experience emotional violence (NDHS, 2018) – 14% of girls experience sexual violence (NDHS, 2018) – 1 in 4 girls experience physical punishment (NDHS, 2018).
The group, therefore, calls for collective action from the government, civil society, and individuals. By prioritising girls’ education, health, protection, and empowerment, we can create a brighter future for Nigeria’s girls.
Oyedeji advocated, “The girl child has inherent rights that must be respected and protected by all. She must not only be seen but heard. Her voice matters, and it must count.
“We call on governments, communities, and individuals to: – Prioritise girls’ education and empowerment
– End child marriage and trafficking
– Promote girls’ leadership and participation
– Protect girls from violence and exploitation
– Ensure inclusive policies and programs
The group also pledged its commitment to supporting girls’ education and skills development, advocating for policies that promote girls’ rights, and providing safe spaces for girls to share their experiences.
