Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi has been remanded in Medium Correctional Centre for alleged rape of a-35-year-old woman in Lagos on Tuesday.
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja remanded the defendant after he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
The defendant was charged to court by the Lagos State Government following a five-count charge of conspiracy, rape, sexual assault by penetration, sexual harassment and assault.
According to the State Prosecution Counsel, B.E Okeowo, the defendant committed the offence contrary to Sections 211, 260, 261, 264 and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
Part of the counts reads “Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi on the 15th day of August 2023 at about 2300hours at Ibeju-Lekki Trade Zone Lagos Judicial Division did conspired with one Franklin Immana Ben (now at large) to commit the offence of rape and assault on (names withheld).
“Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi on the 15th day of August 2023 at about 2300hours at M K Fall Dinning Hall at Ibeju-Lekki Trade Zone, Lagos Judicial Division stood by and watched one while Franklin Immana Ben (now at large) had unlawful sexual intercourse with the defendant without her consent.
“Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi on the 15th day of August 2023 at about 2300hours at M K Fall Dinning Hall Ibeju-Lekki, Trade Zone Lagos Judicial Division unlawfully penetrated the vagina of the defendant without her consent.
“Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi on the 3rd day of August 2022 at about 2300hours at M K Fall Dinning Hall Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Judicial Division harassed the defendant by fondling her breast without her consent and stripping her naked.
“Shuaibu Gbenga Olufowobi on the 15th day of August 2022 at about 2300hours at M K Fall Dinning Hall Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Judicial Division did slap severally and viciously held her neck to prevent her from calling for help.”
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty to all counts.
In view of his plea, the prosecutor asked for a date for trial.
The Defence Counsel, Anthony C. Eze announced appearance for the defendant pro bono and agreed to the date for trial.
Justice Oshodi adjourned till May 6, 2025, for commencement of the trial.
