A boat accident at the Buruku crossing point of the River Katsina-Ala in Benue State has left several passengers feared missing after a vessel carrying more than 70 mourners and over 30 motorcycles capsized while returning from a burial ceremony.

The passengers, mostly from Mbayion in Gboko Local Government Area, were on their way home when the boat’s engine reportedly failed mid-journey.
Panic reportedly spread among those on board before strong waves overturned the vessel, plunging passengers and motorcycles into the river.
More than 60 passengers have reportedly been rescued, while about six people were initially unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continued.
For families waiting anxiously for their loved ones, the uncertainty has turned an already solemn day into a desperate search for answers.
The Chairman of Buruku Local Government Area, Raymond Zege, has confirmed the incident, while Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Denis Iyaghigba, said boat operators had been mobilised to support the rescue efforts.
He urged affected families to remain calm as authorities work to establish the full details.
The boat accident has also renewed concerns about safety on Benue waterways, with authorities urging boat operators and passengers to comply with safety regulations, particularly the mandatory use of life jackets.
