The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a-55-year-old, leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Shamusideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shamelon, for alleged assault of a dispatch rider and murder of a tricycle rider.
Oladiti was brought before Chief Magistrate A.O. Akinde of Court II, Ebute Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court, over allegations of causing the death of a tricycle rider and grievously assaulting a dispatch rider in separate violent incidents on Lagos Island.
The embattled transport union leader is facing a three-count offence in charge number BG/B53/25, bordering on murder charge, and assault occasioning harm, offences contrary to Sections 223, 411, and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Police prosecutor, Anthony Iyeye, told the court that the offences arose from two violent attacks allegedly carried out by the defendant and others still at large.
The incidents, which occurred in August and September 2025, involved the fatal beating of a tricycle rider and the grievous assault of a dispatch rider.
Tricycle rider dies after brutal attack
According to the first count of the murder charge, Oladiti allegedly assaulted one Imam Ramon on August 27, 2025, at about 10:00 a.m. on Lewis Street, Lagos Island, inflicting severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.
The charge read: “That you, Shamusideen Oladiti, on the 27th day of August 2025 at about 1000hrs at Lewis Street, Lagos Island, did unlawfully beat Imam Ramon with fist blows all over his body, which caused him harm and was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, Lagos, where he later died, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
In addition to the murder charge, the prosecution accused Oladiti and others still at large of conspiring on September 17, 2025, to commit grievous harm, an offence punishable under Section 411 of the same law.
The third count alleged that the defendant and his accomplices assaulted Omale Samuel, a dispatch rider, on the same day and location, causing him serious injuries. “That you, Shamusideen Oladiti, and others at large, did unlawfully beat Omale Samuel with fist blows, causing him grievous harm all over his body and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” the charge stated.
Shamusideen Oladiti remanded pending DPP advice
After the charges were read in court, the plea of the defendant was not taken. Chief Magistrate A.O. Akinde ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for legal advice, as required by law in cases involving a murder charge.
The court did not take the plea of the defendant after the charges were read.
The magistrate further ordered that Oladiti be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, pending the outcome of the DPP’s review of the case file.
Chief Magistrate, thereafter adjourned the case till October 28, 2025.
