A Lagos-based law firm, Benson Enikuomehin & Co., has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, over alleged repeated harassment and arrest threats against a fisherman, Mr. Olasimbo Popoola, by some police officers attached to Ilado Police Post and Alakija Police Station.

In the petition dated May 13, 2026, and signed by Peter Adejoh Esq., the lawyers accused one Mr. Abiye Akinmuleya of allegedly using police officers to intimidate and harass residents of Iton-agan community in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
According to the petition, Akinmuleya allegedly “constituted himself a menace on the peaceful coexistence” within the community and frequently enlisted the support of officers from Ilado Police Post and Alakija Police Station to arrest residents who refused to “pay obeisance” to him as the Baale of the community.
The solicitors specifically mentioned Supol Razaki Bashiru and one Mr. Eko Paulinus as persons allegedly used to carry out the intimidation.
The lawyers alleged that on May 9, 2026, Akinmuleya stormed Popoola’s residence and allegedly destroyed shops under construction on the client’s property.
They stated that despite writing a letter on May 11, 2026, advising the police to stay away from land-related disputes, officers allegedly returned to the site on May 13 to halt construction activities.
The petition further claimed that Supol Razaki Bashiru served Popoola with an invitation to report at the Area Command in Alakija.
According to the lawyers, the police “have absolutely nothing to do with adjudication on land matters,” adding that officers should not be used “as instruments in the hands of individuals to do injustice.”
The law firm expressed concern over what it described as persistent abuse of police powers by some officers despite repeated warnings and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
The solicitors stated that they were considering legal action against the police officers and other persons allegedly involved in the matter.
“We are worried that despite the training, retraining and teaching that the high commands in the Police have given to their officers, rank and file, a good number of the Police Officers… have refused to imbibe the tenets of decency and responsibility,” the petition stated.
The lawyers urged the AIG to immediately take over the investigation and “appropriately caution the excesses” of officers attached to Ilado Police Post and Alakija Area Command.
They also appealed for urgent intervention to prevent further harassment of their client and ensure peace in the community.
