The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has expressed deep dismay over the unfortunate and embarrassing incident involving a corps member and individuals identified as vigilantes in Anambra State.
According to a statement signed by Bala Musa, Director, Communication and Media, NOA, the incident is both regrettable and unacceptable.
The agency emphasised that it is shocking that individuals charged with ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerians would act in such an unbecoming and grossly irresponsible manner.
The Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, unequivocally condemned the incident and called for immediate measures to address such rights violations. “The action against the corps member is regrettable, and any similar actions that violate the rights, dignity, and personal security of Nigerian citizens cannot be tolerated,” Issa-Onilu said.
Call for accountability, justice over corps member abuse
NOA underscored the principles of the National Values Charter, stating that both leaders and citizens have reciprocal responsibilities. Leaders must guarantee accountability and uphold public trust, while citizens must demonstrate care and mutual respect in their conduct toward one another. The statement stressed that it is imperative for those in authority to adhere to the Nigerian Promise, which emphasises service, accountability, and leadership by example.
“The abuse of power, especially against youth corps members who serve in the national interest, undermines the foundation of our collective values,” the agency added.
The Director-General commended the swift and responsible response of the Anambra State Government, calling for the diligent prosecution of all individuals involved in this shameful act.
“This is the least measure of justice due to the corps member whose rights and dignity were so brazenly violated,” Issa-Onilu stated.
Corps member: Protecting Nigeria’s reputation
NOA warned that such incidents have a damaging effect on Nigeria’s reputation both locally and internationally. “We must all recognise that such images and incidents severely tarnish our nation’s reputation,” the agency emphasised.
“Every citizen has a responsibility to uphold and project the positive image of Nigeria. Our national reputational asset is sacrosanct and must not be undermined by the actions of a few. This incident must serve as a wake-up call. Enough is enough.”
