It is no longer news that an alleged diversion of goods led to the arrest and confession of a trailer driver, Amisu Isah, by a law enforcement agency in Lagos. What remains unresolved, however, is the identity of the owner of the batch of Marina Spaghetti, alongside how such a crime could have been prevented by connecting the dots through technology and best practices.

If not for vigilance, no one would have known that the driver had diverted the trailer loaded with goods and parked it in front of a church in Egbeda, Lagos, for his alleged accomplices.
However, police officers acted on intelligence and reached the location before all the cartons could be carted away by fleeing suspects, who were transferring the goods into smaller trucks to transport them to unknown locations.
Although a mini truck reportedly escaped with some suspects and part of the stolen goods, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command recovered an Acura SUV allegedly used by one of the fleeing suspects.
However, those fleeing suspects and other would-be criminals may not escape if business owners adopt real-time driver monitoring systems, such as the one recently unveiled by Dangote Transport.
According to the company’s Head of Operations, Dangote Transport, Ibese, Mr. David Idiege, the driver monitoring system is a major milestone. Beyond improving road safety, the launch of its state-of-the-art Driver Monitoring Control Room allows drivers operating company trucks to be monitored in real time while in transit across Nigeria.
For owners of trucks or goods who may be vulnerable to criminals disguised as employees, adopting the innovations embraced by Dangote Transport is critical to protecting their business interests.
According to Mr. Idiege, the key benefit of this innovation is that the facility enables transport control personnel to observe drivers while on the road, monitor compliance with safety standards, and intervene promptly whenever risky behaviour is detected.
“We are constantly looking for innovative ways to strengthen safety across our transport operations. The Driver Monitoring Control Room represents another significant milestone in our efforts to ensure that all journeys are conducted safely and responsibly.”
During a guided tour of the transport operations centre, officials showcased the facility to journalists and highlighted the company’s commitment to leveraging technology and best practices to reduce road accidents and improve driver behaviour.
Speaking during a guided tour of the facility, Mr. Idiege further described the Driver Monitoring Control Room as one of the latest additions to the company’s comprehensive safety architecture.
In his words, “We are constantly looking for innovative ways to strengthen safety across our transport operations. The Driver Monitoring Control Room represents another significant milestone in our efforts to ensure that all journeys are conducted safely and responsibly.”
He further described the control room as one of the latest additions to the safety architecture, adding that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing accidents, enhancing operational efficiency and safeguarding both drivers and other road users.
“Safety remains our highest priority. We recognise the responsibility that comes with operating a large fleet of vehicles across the country. That is why we continue to invest heavily in technology, systems and training that help us maintain the highest safety standards.”
The Head of Operations stated that over the years, the company has implemented several safety measures designed to improve driver performance and minimise risks on the road.
Idiege mentioned that these initiatives include speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed governor control systems, facial recognition devices, journey management protocols, mandatory drug and alcohol testing, compulsory rest periods for drivers, periodic recertification, and regular training and retraining programs.
“Our approach is holistic. Technology alone is not enough. We combine technology with strict operational procedures, driver welfare programmes, competency assessments, recertification exercises and continuous capacity building to ensure that our drivers remain professional and safety-conscious at all times,” Idiege informed journalists.
He highlighted that the company enforces compulsory rest policies to help combat fatigue, one of the leading causes of road accidents globally.
“We do not encourage driver fatigue. Every driver is required to comply with our journey management procedures and mandatory rest schedules. We understand that alert and healthy drivers make safer decisions on the road,” the Dangote Transport official said.
Meanwhile, the Head of Transport Control, Mr. Ifeanyi Ezeala, who also guided journalists through the control facility during the tour, explained that the installation of on-board camera systems across thousands of Dangote trucks was facilitated by a technology partner, Nova Tracks.
In his words, Mr. Ezeala noted that the camera system enables real-time visibility into driver conduct and provides transportation managers with the critical information needed to proactively address safety concerns.
“The technology allows us to monitor driver activities while journeys are in progress. The cameras provide live feeds and alerts, helping us detect behaviours that could compromise safety and enabling us to take immediate corrective action,” he said.
Mr. Ezeala noted that the monitoring solution is not intended to police drivers, but rather to support them and ensure they operate under safer conditions.
“Our objective is preventive rather than punitive. We want to identify potential risks before they develop into incidents. By having visibility into operations in real time, we can contact drivers where necessary, provide guidance and support safer driving decisions,” Ezeala said.
According to him, the system has enhanced fleet management capabilities by providing valuable operational data that strengthens decision-making and supports the company’s overall safety objectives.
Ezeala said, “The transportation industry is evolving rapidly, and technology now plays a critical role in fleet safety management. By integrating advanced monitoring systems into our operations, we are creating a safer environment for our drivers and for all road users.”
Mr. Ezeala, “The transportation industry is evolving rapidly, and technology now plays a critical role in fleet safety management. By integrating advanced monitoring systems into our operations, we are creating a safer environment for our drivers and for all road users.”
He applauded Nova Tracks for its role in deploying the technology and supporting the company’s vision for safer transportation operations.
Representatives of the media lauded the innovation, describing it as a practical demonstration of how technology can be deployed to improve road safety and strengthen accountability within large-scale transport operations.
The Driver Monitoring Control Room is the latest in a series of investments by Dangote Transport aimed at promoting safe driving, reducing accident risks, and advancing operational excellence across its nationwide logistics network.
With thousands of trucks moving raw materials and finished products daily across the country, the company says it will continue to deploy innovative solutions that support safer journeys, improve driver performance, and contribute to a safer road transport ecosystem in Nigeria.
