Barely days after Nigeria confirmed a case of Ebola in Abuja, the identification of two suspected cases in the North-East has renewed attention on the country’s efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

According to an update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, the two individuals have been isolated.
Meanwhile, health authorities have begun investigations to determine whether they are infected with the Ebola virus.

Additionally, contact identification and listing are also underway to establish whether other people may have been exposed.
Also, laboratory tests are being conducted to ascertain the infection status of the suspected cases.
The development comes against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s announcement on October 20, 2026, confirming an Ebola infection in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
That earlier case involved a woman who had recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.
Following laboratory confirmation, she was placed in isolation and received medical care, while public health authorities commenced contact tracing involving 44 identified close contacts.
Now, the emergence of two suspected cases in the North-East has added another dimension to Nigeria’s public health response.
However, health authorities have yet to establish whether the two individuals have contracted Ebola.
Being classified as suspected cases does not amount to a confirmed diagnosis, as the outcome of laboratory investigations will determine their status.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have been advised to maintain good hand hygiene, practice enhanced sanitation and follow instructions from public health authorities.
Further updates are expected as laboratory results and other verified information become available.
