In a move that has triggered widespread outrage within Nigeria’s media community, the International Press Institute, IPI, has condemned the expulsion of Channels TV journalists from the Akwa Ibom State Government House, describing it as a “direct attack” on constitutional press freedoms.

The journalists, a correspondent and a cameraman, were reportedly expelled by order of the Akwa Ibom State Government after Channels TV aired a video clip showing Governor Umo Eno confirming defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a strongly worded statement signed by IPI Legal Adviser and Chairman of its Advocacy Committee, Tobi Soniyi, and Secretary, Ochiaka Ugwu, the organisation demanded an immediate reversal of the state government’s action.
“The state government’s reckless action is an alarming development. These journalists are experienced media personnel with a deep knowledge of government activities, and no journalist should be made to face this kind of humiliating treatment simply for doing their job,” the statement said.
“We will continue to support and encourage impartial reportage no matter the situation,” IPI added.
The institute said the expulsion constitutes a gross violation of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 22 of Chapter 2, which mandates the press to “uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.”
“It is especially distressing and disappointing that Governor Umo Eno, considered a media-friendly state executive, could behave in this unacceptable and anti-democratic manner,” the statement read.
IPI urged the governor to “immediately reverse the expulsion and save his government from further embarrassment,” emphasising that “independent journalism, press freedom and unbiased reportage are essential to democracy.”
The incident has raised questions about the state government’s tolerance for press freedom and the implications for democratic governance in Akwa Ibom
