Nigeria is set to deepen its transition to sustainable transportation with the launch of the Northern Corridor Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, and Electric Vehicle, EV, Programme in Kano on Thursday.

The initiative, driven by the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, Pi-CNG & EV, is expected to introduce cheaper and cleaner transport alternatives across Northern Nigeria.
According to a statement signed by Onyekachi Eke, Head of Brand and Communications for the initiative, the programme will serve as a major catalyst for the expansion of green transport infrastructure in the region.
The Kano clean energy transport hub is expected to draw senior government officials, private sector investors and transport industry stakeholders critical to the project’s long-term implementation.
CNG, EV assets to be commissioned
Organisers disclosed that the event today will feature the formal commissioning of CNG and EV assets, alongside live demonstrations of clean mobility solutions already being deployed across the country.
The demonstrations are expected to showcase the viability of alternative energy sources in Nigeria’s transport sector, which has long depended heavily on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.
The initiative is also designed to ensure that the benefits of clean transportation extend beyond major southern commercial centres to northern parts of the country.
The Kano clean energy transport hub aligns with the Federal Government’s broader economic strategy aimed at reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Following the removal of fuel subsidies, authorities have intensified efforts to promote CNG and electric-powered transportation as cost-effective alternatives for commuters and businesses.
Stakeholders believe the programme could help reduce logistics costs, improve mobility and provide economic relief amid rising inflation and high energy prices.
Northern corridor seen as national model
Analysts say the success of the Kano clean energy transport hub could provide a template for similar projects in other regions of the country.
The initiative also supports Nigeria’s broader “gas-to-prosperity” agenda focused on leveraging natural gas resources to drive economic growth and cleaner energy adoption.
With growing attention on sustainable mobility, observers say the Kano rollout will be closely monitored as Nigeria seeks long-term solutions to its transport and energy challenges.
