The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, will attend the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ FCT Council Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony as Special Guest of Honour.

The event, themed “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation,” is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Lagos/Osun Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja by 10:00 a.m.
The lecture is expected to attract top government officials, media professionals, security stakeholders, political leaders and civil society groups to deliberate on the growing threat of fake news, misinformation and propaganda ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the organisers, Umaru Mohammed Bago will chair the occasion, while former Kano State Governor and Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Abdullahi Ganduje, will serve as Co-Chairman.
Former minority leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, is expected to deliver the keynote lecture.
President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, will serve as Chief Host, while Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, will host the event.
Disu has continued to attract national attention for his professionalism, intelligence-led policing and community-driven security initiatives, which have earned him commendation across the country.
Before his elevation to national responsibilities, the police chief served in several strategic commands where he recorded notable successes in crime fighting, anti-kidnapping operations and efforts aimed at restoring public confidence in policing.
His tenure in Lagos, particularly in tactical and investigative units, was marked by coordinated crackdowns on armed robbery, cultism and other violent crimes.
Disu also gained national prominence during his leadership of the Police Intelligence Response Team, IRT, where several criminal syndicates were dismantled and kidnap victims rescued through intelligence-driven operations.
He has been described by stakeholders as a modern policing advocate committed to professionalism, inter-agency collaboration and community engagement.
Observers believe his participation at the NUJ lecture is timely as discussions intensify on the role of security agencies, the media and citizens in protecting Nigeria’s democracy against misinformation and divisive narratives ahead of the 2027 elections.
The event will also feature awards presentations to distinguished Nigerians who have contributed to national development and democratic growth.
