The Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, has commenced the evacuation of occupants and the controlled demolition of a highly distressed building at Akinyele Bus Stop in Abesan Estate, Lagos, after structural experts declared the property unsafe for habitation.

The emergency action followed a report from a concerned resident through the Agency’s toll-free line, alerting officials to visible signs of severe structural defects and expressing fears over the safety of occupants and nearby residents.
According to a statement made available by Adu Ademuyiwa, the Director, Public Affairs, LASBCA, a team of structural experts and enforcement officers was immediately deployed to inspect the building.
The assessment confirmed that the structure had developed critical defects capable of causing a collapse, posing an imminent threat to lives and property.
Following the inspection, the Agency evacuated all occupants and began a controlled demolition of the building in line with its mandate to prevent building collapse and protect public safety.
Speaking during the exercise, the General Manager of LASBCA, Builder Florence Gbaye, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring that distressed buildings do not endanger residents across Lagos State.
She commended the resident whose prompt report led to the intervention, noting that the action may have averted a major tragedy.
Gbaye urged members of the public to report distressed, abandoned or visibly defective buildings to LASBCA, stressing that public cooperation is essential to preventing building collapses and safeguarding lives and property.
She also assured Lagos residents that the Agency would continue monitoring buildings across the state, enforce compliance with building safety regulations and respond swiftly to reports of structural distress.
LASBCA reiterated its appeal to residents to report suspected distressed buildings and other building safety concerns through its toll-free line, 07000-527222 (07000-LASBCA), for immediate response.
Upon receiving the report, officials of the Agency swiftly deployed a team of structural experts and enforcement officers to the location for an immediate assessment.
The inspection confirmed that the building had suffered critical structural defects, posing an imminent danger to lives and property.
Following the assessment, LASBCA immediately evacuated all occupants from the building to prevent any loss of life and commenced the controlled demolition of the distressed structure in line with its statutory mandate to safeguard public safety.
Speaking on the exercise, the General Manager of LASBCA, Bldr. Gbaye, said the Agency remained committed to ensuring that unsafe buildings do not constitute a threat to residents across the State.
She commended the concerned citizen who promptly reported the distressed building through the Agency’s toll-free line, noting that the timely intervention helped prevent what could have resulted in a tragic incident.
