Alhaji (Dr.) Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, has called on road transport workers across Nigeria to join the union, saying membership offers protection, stronger representation, improved welfare and greater opportunities for economic empowerment.

In a message addressed to workers in the road transport industry, Akinsanya said the NURTW remains committed to advancing the interests of drivers, conductors, vehicle owners, dispatch riders, haulage operators, taxi and tricycle operators, as well as others involved in road transportation.

He described transport workers as indispensable to Nigeria’s economy, noting that millions of Nigerians depend on their daily services.

“The purpose of NURTW is to ensure that every transport worker enjoys dignity, protection, representation and a strong collective voice,” he said.

The NURTW president said the union operates in line with internationally recognised labour standards, citing the International Labour Organisation, ILO Convention No. 87 on Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise and Convention No. 98 on the Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining.

According to him, the conventions guarantee workers’ rights to freely belong to unions of their choice, participate in union activities and receive fair representation without discrimination or unlawful interference.

Akinsanya said members of the union benefit from a nationwide network dedicated to protecting workers’ welfare, defending their legitimate rights, promoting safer working conditions and creating opportunities for economic empowerment.

He added that the union’s vision is to build a modern, professional, disciplined and globally respected transport organisation that embraces innovation, education, road safety, technology and sustainable development.

The NURTW president also pledged continued collaboration with governments, employers, development partners and other stakeholders to improve the welfare of transport workers while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Emphasising the importance of unity, Akinsanya said a united membership strengthens the union’s ability to negotiate effectively, command respect and create opportunities for members.

He urged transport workers nationwide to join the union and work collectively towards building a more professional, secure and prosperous road transport industry.

“We will continue to uphold the values of unity, justice, professionalism, integrity and service. Together, we will strengthen our union and build a transport industry that reflects the hopes and aspirations of our members and the progress of our nation,” he said.
